Members of the St. Tammany Parish Marine Division recovered the body of a 28-year-old kayaker late Tuesday (August 9) evening on Doubloon Bayou near Slidell.

At approximately 10 p.m. a man called STPSO to report his adult son missing after he located the son’s kayak overturned in the bayou behind his house. The son was last seen fishing in the bayou at 5:30 p.m. that evening. 

Using flatboats, the STPSO Marine Division searched the area of the overturned kayak and located the man’s body underwater shortly before 11:30 p.m.  The body has been turned over the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for a determination on a cause and manner of death

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is investigating the incident.

“My condolences go out to this family,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Let this unfortunate event serve as a reminder to everyone to please wear life vest at all times when on the water.”
