Sheriff Randy Smith has named the 2020 St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Year - Deputy First Class Sean Gowan.

DFC Gowan was hired by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in the Criminal Patrol Division (District II) in October 2014.

During his time in patrol, DFC Gowan served as an active Field Training Officer, mentoring many new recruits and was a member of the FTO board.

In January 2020, he was transferred to the Highway Enforcement Unit, a specialized unit which concentrates on traffic enforcement and intercepting traveling criminals primarily on the interstate systems in St. Tammany Parish. DFC Gowan’s dedication and work in this unit has led to multiple arrests and the seizure of narcotics.

“DFC Gowan’s dedication, passion and work ethic exemplifies what the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is all about,” Sheriff Smith said. “Please join me in congratulating him and thanking him for his service to the citizens of St. Tammany Parish.”

DFC Gowan graduated from Slidell High School and attended Southeastern Louisiana University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He and his wife have three rescue dogs, one of which he encountered during a service call and later adopted from Animal Control in 2019.
