A Pearl River man was arrested for aggravated arson after he set a house on fire Friday (April 28) afternoon with his grandmother inside.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. Friday, fire personnel were dispatched in reference to a residential structure fire in the Hickory area.

An elderly woman was inside the home when the fire started, but she escaped and called 911 from a neighbor’s residence.  Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, detectives with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene.

Through their investigation, STPSO detectives learned the elderly woman’s grandson, Nickolas Lee Barringer (DOB 2/6/1985) of Pearl River, had set the house on fire after texting his grandmother saying he was going to do so following an argument.

Barringer was arrested Friday evening. He will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on one count of aggravated arson. Barringer will also be booked on an outstanding warrant for Telephone Harassment.
