St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputies have taken a Covington-area man to a local hospital for evaluation after a standoff outside his parents’ home this early this morning.

At approximately 1 a.m. today, a father called 911 to report that his son was suicidal and had left the home in the 71000 block of Lake Placid Rd with a shotgun.

Responding deputies made contact with the man’s girlfriend, who informed them that he was with her in her vehicle and he no longer had the firearm.  She attempted to drive the man back to his parents’ residence; however, when the man saw patrol cars near the house he leaped from the car and fled into the woods.

Deputies fanned out to search but were unable to locate the man. A short time later, the father called back to report his son had returned to the residence and had barricaded himself inside a bedroom with the shotgun.

The man was very uncooperative with deputies at the residence and the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was called to the scene.  At approximately 3 a.m., the man exited the rear of the residence and SWAT team members took him into custody without injury to anyone involved.

The man was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital, where he will undergo evaluation by hospital personnel.
