An inmate in the St. Tammany Parish Jail was found unresponsive by deputies after apparently hanging himself in his cell late Thursday (February 25) night.

The inmate was found hanging at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the isolation cell where he was being held.

Jail staff removed the ligature from the inmate’s neck, immediately began CPR and contacted medical personnel. Deputies continued life saving measures until an ambulance arrived. The inmate, who had a pulse, was transported to a local area hospital, where on Friday (February 26) he died.

Out of respect to the family, the name of the inmate is being withheld, pending notifications.

The incident is under investigation and no additional information will be provided at this time.
