Divers with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office dive team Sunday afternoon recovered a vehicle which went over the railing of the Causeway and into the lake.

The vehicle was traveling on the south bound span at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning when it left the travel lane and flipped over the railing. The incident occurred near the 16 mile marker (eight miles from the northshore).

Deputies with the Sheriff’s marine division searched the area in boats and located the vehicle a short time later near the draw bridge. The driver, believed to be the lone occupant, was still in the vehicle when it was recovered.

Fire District 4 personnel extricated the body, which was turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s office for identification and family notification.

Causeway Police worked the crash incident.
