UPDATE: Search continues

The search for a man who reportedly jumped over the side rail of the eastbound twin span enters its second day as St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office marine deputies continue to comb the area.  The man is believed to be from Mississippi.  Yesterday, deputies canvassed portions of eastern Lake Pontchartrain with boats equipped with underwater imaging devices but were unable to locate the man.  The search was aided yesterday by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.  This afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office will deploy its own helicopter in order to broaden the search area. We will post updates on the search as new information develops.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently attempting to locate a man who reportedly jumped off the eastbound twin span this morning.

At approximately 8:30 this morning, the Sheriff’s Office received a number of 911 calls from motorists on the twin spans who reported seeing a black Cadillac pull over to the shoulder at mile marker 258 (approximately two miles from the north shore). Witnesses said the male driver exited the vehicle and jumped over the side rail of the bridge.

Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies, along with Sheriff’s marine division boats are on the scene attempting to locate the man. Deputies are also trying to identify the man through documents in the vehicle, which was registered in Mississippi.
