St. Tammany residents have been bombarded this week with calls from scammers, pretending to be from both the Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshal’s Office.

The scammers, calling from numbers displaying local area codes, inform the resident they have missed jury duty and have warrants out for their arrest.

Playing on fear and panic, they convince the victim to purchase “Green Dot money cards” in amounts ranging from $3,000 to $7,500 and relay the access numbers over the phone to have the warrant rescinded. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Financial Crimes Division is currently investigating more than $20,000 in losses from these scam calls.

This scam has been reported extensively across south Louisiana and the United States over the past year. Scammers have proven to be successful with a variety of these types of scams, using computer generated phone numbers and police agencies information easily found on the internet.

Please be aware that the St Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and the 22nd Judicial Court system will NEVER call you on the phone and direct you to provide such information.

THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE DOES NOT ACCEPT GREEN DOT MONEY CARDS FOR PAYMENT.
