In 2003, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit was established. The need for developing this unit was due to an ever-changing atmosphere, and mode of operations of criminal elements within our parish. The deputies assigned to this unit concentrate on investigating property crimes such as theft, burglary, and graffiti; street level narcotics; gang activity; violent crimes such as robbery, assaults, and homicides; and wanted subjects. These highly trained deputies gather intelligence, perform undercover operations, and execute search warrants. The Street Crimes Unit was formed to fight criminal activity at the street level within St. Tammany Parish. Unit members are responsible for conducting proactive criminal investigations. The Street Crimes Unit also assists other departmental units and law enforcement agencies, utilizing a geographical based enforcement strategy involving investigations of all crimes against persons and property.
The main goal of the Street Crimes Unit is to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for the citizens of St. Tammany Parish. The Street Crimes Unit actively solicits tips from other deputies and members of the public, regarding suspected criminal activity of an ongoing, chronic nature. The Street Crimes Unit is established as a problem solving unit that has the ability and resources to address the majority of problems that plague our neighborhoods. This unit is comprised of one lieutenant, one sergeant, and five deputies. They are strictly proactive and work a flexible schedule to be available to respond to a variety of situations. All members of this specialized unit are hand selected and must go through rigorous physical training and ultimately be selected to serve on the S.W.A.T. team.
