Operation Show Me the Money Continues

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Operation Show Me the Money, which began Saturday, November 20th, continues this month with the arrest of additional people wanted for failing to pay child support and / or issuing worthless checks.

On the first day of the operation, arrest warrants were executed on 112 individuals at the Harbor Center when they showed up thinking they were receiving stimulus checks from the Louisiana Recovery Directive, a fictitious organization created by the Sheriff’s Office for the operation.

In early November, more than 600 letters were mailed to individuals with warrants for non-support and worthless checks. The letters instructed them to arrive at the Harbor Center at a given date and time to receive their stimulus funds.

To house those brought in during the operation temporary facilities were constructed on the grounds of the St. Tammany Parish Jail. During the first weekend of the operation, 59 of the persons arrested were released after settling their debts and posting bonds if they had additional charges.

Immediately following the opening weekend, Sheriff’s deputies began searching for those among the 600 who chose not to show up Saturday. That process will continue indefinitely as the Sheriff’s Office is prepared to staff and maintain the temporary holding facility throughout the holidays.

In the first few days after the operation began, a steady stream of people arrived at the District Attorney’s office to settle unpaid debts, presumably in an effort to avoid being brought to jail as the operation continues.

A list of active warrants held by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is available on the main page of our web site.
